 | Moscow Heritage at Crisis Point Report Comes to UK. |
The report arrives in the UK!
A new report from the Moscow Architecture Preservation Society (MAPS) and SAVE Europe’s Heritage, with contributions from an international panel of experts, condemns the losses while illustrating the astonishing range of historic building in Moscow, from 17th century palaces to 1920’s Avant-Garde bus garages – all threatened by the furious pace of redevelopment in the city under the auspices of mayor Yuri Luzhkov and a coterie of property developers including his wife.
This bilingual report contains over 200 illustrations. As well as outlining the threats, it is a wonderful introduction to the architecture of Moscow. It also contains examples of recent fine restoration and successful industrial conversions.
More than a thousand buildings, hundreds of them of historic and architectural importance, have been destroyed in the last five years, approximately 200 of them with monument status.
The report includes a survey of threatened and lost buildings and practical recommendations on how to save what remains of Moscow’s architectural heritage, including suggested changes to Russian law. It is the first international survey of its kind.
The report includes case studies of several of the city’s endangered landmarks including St Basil’s Cathedral, the 18th Century Tsaritsyno Palace, Stalinist era Children’s World Department Store, the celebrated Mayakovskyaya Metro Station, and icons of the Russian avant garde - the Melnikov House and Narkomfin.
